Common Symptoms of Low Back Pain

If you have a back injury or a condition that affects the lower back, you may experience symptoms such as:

  • Tingling in the extremities.
  • Numbness in the extremities.
  • Difficulty walking.
  • Muscle weakness.
  • Pain in the back.
  • Pain in the buttock.

Common Causes of Low Back Pain

There are many reasons that people experience low back pain. Sometimes low back pain is caused by injury, other times by chronic conditions. Some of the most common causes of low back pain include:

  • Herniated disc. Herniated disc is a condition that occurs when the spongy disc between the vertebrae protrudes from the tough casing that encloses it. Herniated disc is a type of injury that often affects people after car accidents, slips and falls and after lifting very heavy objects.
  • Muscle strain. Muscle strain in the lower back is often caused by poor lifting or twisting habits. Muscle strain can lead to long-term back pain, or it can simply create a temporary problem. People who bend and lift for their jobs are more likely to experience chronic low back pain as a result of their activities.
  • Degenerative disc disease. Degenerative disc disease is a condition that often occurs with old age. Patients with degenerative disc disease will experience thinning of the discs, loss of cushion between the vertebrae and disc herniation. This condition is chronic and while it can be managed, it cannot be completely cured.
  • Spondylolisthesis. This condition occurs when the vertebrae, usually in the lower back, slips out of place and sticks out farther than other vertebrae in the spine. Some patients will live with this condition for years without being aware of it. Once the patient begins to feel pain, they may experience symptoms like weakness, loss of bladder control and other symptoms.

Chiropractic Care is Non-Invasive, Non-Surgical Treatment

Chiropractic care is highly effective against musculoskeletal pain because chiropractic techniques are intended to realign the spine and restore good health to the central nervous system. By improving the functioning of the central nervous system, chiropractic care also boosts immune function, improves the body's ability to heal and helps patients feel better overall. At Isanti Chiropractic Clinic in Isanti MN, we use the following techniques to help patients manage their pain:

Spinal adjustment. During spinal adjustments, the chiropractor realigns the vertebrae to reduce pressure on the joints and muscles in the back.

Lifestyle advice. We provide lifestyle advice to help patients avoid habits that can exacerbate their pain. Lifestyle advice helps people live healthier lives so they can avoid pain in the future.

Stretches and exercises. Performing stretches and exercises can improve mobility and muscle flexibility. We teach patients stretches and exercises that can relieve their pain.

Functional medicineThis technique is a system-based approach to heal injuries, treating the cause rather than the symptoms.
